CoResist Project

Inspired by my graduate school professor Najeeba Syeed saying, “We need interreligious scholarship that is beyond coexistence and dialogue. That gets to our need for co-resistance,” I took a spin on the infamous interreligious “CoExist” sticker to create a “CoResist” one.

This was originally designed in 2017, and at the time, a friend who owns a small screenprinting business offered to print CoResist t-shirts, stickers, totes, and more–and offered to donate a portion of the proceeds to the ACLU, to support the legal aid they were giving at the time to support Muslims targeted by the Trump administration’s #MuslimBan. And we raised over $1,200!

Since then, I’ve updated the CoResist design, and we are now directing donations to one of our local racial justice organizations doing powerful work here in Portland, Don’t Shoot Portland.

For those who have asked, here are the meanings of the symbols (I was not able to include all religious symbols, and this was based off the ones included in the “Coexist” sticker, but feel free to edit/remix as you like!):

C: Islam (star and crescent)

O: Buddhism (dharma wheel)

R: Unitarian Universalism (flaming chalice)

E: inclusive gender symbols

S: Judaism (Star of David)

I: Humanism

S: Taoism/Confucianism (yin and yang symbol)

T: Christianity (cross)
